Nominees of the 42nd Annual NAACP Image Awards have been read out on Wednesday, January 12. While Willow Smith and Justin Timberlake were unraveled as contenders in music and movie, Disney darling Selena Gomez and "Glee" actress Amber Riley took the television field.
18-year-old Selena earned a nod for Outstanding Performance in a Youth/Children's Program thanks to her portrayal of Alex Russo in "Wizards of Waverly Place". She is up against "Victorious" beauty Victoria Justice, "True Jackson, VP" star Keke Palmer, "Yo Gabba Gabba: Baby" actor Lance Robertson and "TeenNick Halo Awards 2010" host Nick Cannon.
24-year-old Amber who is known for her role as Mercedes Jones, in the meantime, found herself in competition against "Modern Family" actress Sofia Vergara. They both vie for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series along with Anna Deavere Smith, Keshia Knight Pulliam and Viola Davis.
While the two TV stars received a nomination each, Tyler Perry showed of his domination in the comedy genre with seven nods. His "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" series collected five counts, while his other project "Meet the Browns" picked up two noms. Leading the drama genre, on the other hand, was "Grey's Anatomy" with five nods.
NAACP Awards also recognizes achievements in music, movie and literature. The nominations were announced during a press conference at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, California, and separate nomination for the writing and directing categories can be read at NAACP Image Awards' official site.
